The Den, or fashionable promenade, commences from Mr. Cove's beautiful cottage at the extremity of East Teignmouth, to the ship yards, and terminates west, extending nearly a mile. It runs parallel with the beach, to the point opposite Shaldon, where it forms a curve, and seats have been erected that pedestrians may view both the river and channel scenery, or await the arrival of the passage-boat, close to the Cottage Orne of Mr. Kendall, which command a full view of the estuary of the Teign. From hence, looktowards the sea, the Ness, the whitened beach of Babbicombe, the scattered rocks of Minnicombe, and the protruding point of Bob's Nose, forming the entrance into Torbay, are to be seen on the right. To the left stretches a line of sands under the red sandstone cliffs, which terminate in that fine incongruous mass of rocks behind the Parson andClerk, around whose point lies Dawlish. On a clear day, Budleigh hill, the limestone rocks, reaching from Sidmouth to Beer, the chalky cliffs of Dorsetshire, and even the bill of Portland, may be distinguished, during the time when To mute and to material thing, New life revolving summer brings; The genial call dead nature hears, And in her glory re-appears. A gay scene presents itself, when crouds flock from all the neighbourhood to this spot, in order to enjoy the novelty of an annual regatta, or boat race. Though many, during the last summer-, viewed with beating hearts the swelling sails expanding to the breeze, and bearing away to distant climes, perhaps never to return, their nearest and dearest hopes--when the fleet sailing for Algiers was plainly discerned in the offing, and excited more than usual sympathy, the cause alone of releasing Christian captives from Infidel...
