Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from A Guide for the Study of Heyse's L'arrabbiata: With Questions for Grammar Review
The present tendency in the teaching of German as a living language is rightly, as much as possible, to teach the student the language through the lan guage. Nearly all the texts offered consist only in questions for conversational drill. The grammar side of the language, so essential for students of mature years, has been neglected, due perhaps to the baneful in?uence of the too common use of the grammar as a mere text-book. The other extreme, however, of devoting too much time to conversation and pronunciation without grammar drill has just as serious faults. The teacher must ever keep in mind the ultimate aim of college German. It is impossible for a student to cope with difficult texts.
