Publisher's Synopsis

Previous studies find significant community-level differences in the out-of-home placement rates of children. However, it remains unclear which community-level factors, other than geographical factors, explain the differences in placement rates. This study extends previous research by analyzing whether alternative municipal-level factors - the provision of formal support and of social support, social disorganization, and local political preferences - explain community-level variations in children's placement rates. The paper analyzes data from Danish administrative registers and, using multilevel models, it reports that municipal differences in levels of formal support, social support, and social disorganization affect out-of-home placement rates.
