Excerpt from A French Reader: Arranged For Beginners In Preparatory Schools And Colleges
This reader is adapted either to accompany or to follow elementary grammatical work in secondary schools and colleges. The selections are carefully graded, leading from matter that can be successfully handled at the very beginning to typical French of moderate difficulty. An unusual amount of easy text is given for the benefit of those who use a reader from the outset. Care has been taken to choose material interesting from the pupil's point of view. At the same time, nothing has been chosen which is not worth while to read, or which will not tend to create a sympathetic interest in the life and literature of the French people. Nearly all is new to a school reader. Part I consists chiefly of French folk-lore; Part II of short stories; Part III of simple poems.
A reader for beginners should present no needless difficulties, since these impede progress, deaden interest, and obstruct the rapid mastery of the simple essentials. Consequently much liberty has been taken in simplifying the text, especially in the earlier selections.
In the preparation of the Vocabulary and Notes the following aims have been constantly in mind: (a) To lead the pupil to think rather than to memorize mechanically; (b) to enable him not merely to translate the several selections, but also to translate French; (c) to secure correct and idiomatic English.
