The present volume is based upon the belief that gram mar, composition, and literature are not three separate and distinct subjects, but merely three inter-related divisions Of the same subject - English. If this be so, they should not be studied separately but together; only in this way can their true relation be brought out. Teachers of the classics and the romance languages, as well as teachers Of English, are unanimous in their Opinion that the greatest hindrance to the effective teaching Of language at the present time is the student's ignorance Of English grammar. We have, therefore, placed the section on grammar first instead of last, and have sought to make it fill a place between the brief review Of grammar that is occasionally appended to books on composition and the more complete treatises on the subject. As a further aid to the study Of grammar in other languages and in keeping with the recommendation Of the National Education AS Sociation, Universal Nomenclature has been used.
