All 4 species are endangerd, the mountain gorillas more so than the lowland gorillas, due to loss of habitat, illegal wildlife trade, hunting for bushmeat and infectious diseases, some of which they can catch from humans. Their well-developed failial social structure is headed by a dominant male who maintains his position for year. Family groups usually number 5 - 10 but can include fewer or quite a few more.
