Emma, a young maid in Edwardian Chester, is desperate to avenge the death of her sister Aggie, who committed suicide after falling pregnant and being abandoned. A chance meeting with another young servant, Alice, introduces Emma to the household of Victoria Waters, who is passionately involved in the Suffragette Movement. As Emma and Alice become closer, Emma learns of Alice's destructive and deranged ex-fiancé Bert, and it becomes apparent that the girls may be linked in more ways than one.
