When the drum beats to'quarters, the surgeon has to see that_the operation table is securely fixed that there is sufficient supply of candles and lant horns, and that the assistants know their places. He has to consider also what provision is made for the wounded after they are dressed, and to see that the cots are hung up in the tiers or other safe places. It is now a' time of fearful expectation, and there are few situations in which a man more requires coolness of re?ection. It is now that he feels how much the nature of the wounds of those who may be brought down to him ought to have occupied his mindin previous study.
