John C. Calhoun was an American political theorist who served as the seventh Vice President of the United States under Andrew Jackson. Calhoun is also remembered for advancing the idea of minority rights in politics and he believed in limited government. Calhoun wrote A Discourse on the Constitution and Government of the United States to emphasize his concern of an oppressive government. Calhoun believed a government could have the tendency to abuse its power.
