Excerpt from A Discourse Delivered at the Opening of the Medical Institution of Geneva College, State of New York: February 10, 1835
By materia medica we are to understand that it is a science which treats of the natural history and virtues of all those bodies which are capable of procuring certain changes in the condition of the living system, whereby its morbid actions may be entirely removed or ad vantageously controlled. In this definition I would include the operation of the gases and all the necessary restraints and specific remedies for the diseases of the moral faculty.
