When, the business at-the Bull's-head, the o inion of the town was evident ly and dec1dedly fir an investigation into abuses, known to exist in its civil regulations. At that meeting, the long lost book, called the Red Basil, was brought forw'a'rd to phbfic view; with a bal ance in favour of the town ofthree thou sand three hundred and six pounds seventeen shillings and' six-pence! The few charges adduced rat the meeting, weré established hy'the concurrejit evidence of several witne3sgs, while the pré'v'arzfi eating and sh'ztfiing counter testimony of Mr. Hall lows, with hzs um (y his friend the pozuddy weaver, and his dusty ?ashed conviction ihto the minds of every person present. Ihdeed all seemed to manifest a zealous wish to prosecute the enquiry, and to heal thos'e cancerous and com 'roding parts in the system; which ignqrance, management, peculation, and breach qftrust had en 'gendered It seldom, if evet, happens, that'pubfic 'opini011, fairly and impartially taken, errs injuéjgl ment; such was the casc'iti the presient. Enq'uiry; which appeared from the decided approbation given to the proposed measure. I should be wholly at a loss after this, to account for that sub; sequent Opposition given by éertain individuals in its. Progress, did I not sufficiently know to what absurd lengths the spirit of party leads, and the gratification it feels from opposztz'o? - even to measl tires of uhltc'good.
