Usually a man must be a bachelor before he can commence the course leading to a master degree, and a master before he can become a candidate for a doctor degree.
There is always an examination before a degree is conferred, although this may not be distinctly stated in this work. In the case of an honorary degree, there is an examination of the character, professional and scholastic standing, and of the literary, scientific, and professional works of the candidate.
