Excerpt from A Dictionary of Terms in Art
Acropolis. A walled city on the summit of a hill; the citadel on the tap of a rock, which usually included the most sacred buildings. The Acropolis at Athens was built on the highest point of the mountain, and contained the famous temple of Minerva (the Parthenon) and the sacred statue of the goddess. It was accessible from one point only. All ancient hill cities in Asia Minor had an Acropolis.
