Having begun, in company with some young associates, to practise the art of short-hand writing, I took copious notes of those lectures, for the subject of which I had, even at that time, a strong partiality. The lecturer, always anxious to encourage the youthful student, offered a pre mium for the best copy of his first lecture, and awarded the same to me. From that circumstance there arose.
