New-England alfd imports Logwood for the dying our Woollen Goods iii Quantities fufficient for our own Ufe, and a Surplus with which we furnifh Holland, Hambro, and other Markets irt Europe. It is wholly owing to the Induftry of the People of New-England, that this ufeful Commodity is reduc'd from 30 and 40/. per Ton, which we Us'd to pay for it to the Spaniard, to 12, /. per Ton; which is the prefent Price and out of this ia/. there is 4 /. 50 di, paid to the Crown for Cuftom. Other Articles might be mentioned, as5 Whak-Oil and Finns, which are yearly imported from New-England in no contemptible Quantities. They are ufeful in feveral Manufactures; and if not had from thence, muft have teen purchas'd of the 'Dutch with ready Money, and at exceflive Prices. 'Tis true, New-England rrtakes no Sugar, but it aflifts the Iflands that do i without which Afliftance they dould not make it, at leaft not cheap enough, and in fufficient Quantities to antwer the Markets in Europe. For if the Sugat Iflands were oblig'd to fow Wheat, and plant as much Indian Corn as they wanted, they muft needs plant the fewer Canes, and by confequence make the lefs C z Sugar. Sugar. From thence they are alfo fupply'd with Horfes for their Mills, Timber for their Sugar-Works, Staves for their Cask, and what is more confiderable, with Barrel Pork, Mackrel, and refufe Cod-Fim for their Negroes, without which their Labour would yield nothing to their Owners. For were they to feed their Slaves with Beef and other Provifions from Britain and Ireland, the Expence of a Plantation would devour the whole Produce of it.
