Gomberg3 then showed that the carbinol halides dissolved in ionizing solvents - such as sulphur dioxide - with color and conducted electricity. The conclusion drawn was in support of Baeyer's halochromic theory. The color of the solutions was thought to be due to the positive ion. The ester formula seemed now pretty well established.
