Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from A Concise Dictionary of Greek and Roman Antiquities: Based on Sir William Smith's Larger Dictionary, and Incorporating the Results of Modern Research
Some indulgence may be asked for on the plea that classical archaeology receives such large additions every year, that it is difficult to keep pace with the latest discoveries. In a work of this kind it often happens that an illustration will convey to the mind of a young student a more definite and accurate idea than a long verbal description. On this ground, upwards of 200 illustrations which do not occur in the larger work have been inserted in this volume. The Editor has endeavoured, as far as possible, to avoid controversial subjects as being out of place in a Dictionary of this kind; and when it has not been possible to do so, his aim has been to set down briefly the opinion which appeared to have the support of the best authorities. Where the best scholars are not agreed whether to follow inscriptions 01' manuscripts, a strictly consistent orthography can hardly be maintained.
