Publisher's Synopsis

Volume 1 contains some 15,000 Sanskrit head-words. For each is set out the forms it has assumed both in Middle Indo-Aryan (Poli, Prakrit, etc.) and in the modern Indo-Aryan languages, thus presenting a unique picture of linguistic development over some three millennia. The words quoted in this way number about 150,000. Volume 2 contains language-by-language indices, Volume 3 is a phonetic analysis of the head-words, while Volume 4 contains addenda and corrigenda.
