Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from A Brief Biographical Dictionary
For instance, the figures 8, 3, 5, frequently get put in each other's places, owing probably to a rough resemblance among them, especially in indistinct manuscript; and not only in manuscript, for any one who has to consult the new edition of the Biograpkie Universelle must often have regretted that the type there used makes the 5 and 3 so nearly alike as to require a close scrutiny to detect the difference. Examples occurring in the preparation of the present work of 6 in the copy appearing as 9 in the proof, and instances in other works of these two figures being interchanged, make it tolerably evident that they sometimes get inverted by the printer, either in sorting the types or in the act of composition. Im perfect formations in the copy have also, it would appear, caused 6 and 9 both to be replaced by 0. Cases of 6 for 0 have been remarked in correcting these sheets, and in the Biographie Universelle, John Hiibner appears as born in 1608 for 1668. The figures 1 and 7 [1 and 9, 7 and 9] have also been interchanged.
