Bookseller Notes

The author, born into a military family, had his first taste of fighting in the Second Boer War, and thereafter, as his Prologue puts it, 'continued to fight almost incessantly until 1921' - including in the Great War, with which this book is concerned, and then in the Lithuanian and Irish Wars of Independence - before turning his outlook towards the lasting achievement of Peace. The present book is, through its brutal account of the business of fighting, in service of the latter.
