The development of transfusion medicine into an independent discipline accompanied the rapid development of modern high-performance medicine in the second half of the 20th century. Against the background of the history of the subject, the present book describes the establishment of the independent department for transfusion medicine at the University Hospital Erlangen and, above all, works out its peculiarities and unique selling points in Bavarian university medicine. Finally, the perspective of transfusion medicine in the 21st century is examined.
