The subjects of the problems include elementary arithmetic, elementary algebra, and reasoning/deduction ability. No calculator is required. The only tools needed to solve the problems are paper and pencil. The idea of these problems is stressing deduction and reasoning instead of calculations - but not excluding them. These kinds of problems have a particular value and appeal because they look to teach the students to analyze. The goal is to lead the students to seek unconventional solutions.
