3-Trifluoromethylaniline is exclusively an intermediate which is almost totally converted to a further intermediate, 3-trifluoromethylphenylisocyanate. The isocynate is exclusively exported and further processed abroad in the manufacture of plant protection products and pharmaceutics.;Total production in the Federal Republic of Germany is currently about 1000 t/a of which about 50 t/a are exported. The sole manufacturer in the Federal Republic of Germany is Hoechst AG.;In the Federal Republic of Germany the discharge on production and processing was estimated at less than 60 kg/a into natural waters and at about 6 kg/a into the air. On the basis of a metabolic cleavage of pre-emergence herbicides manufactured from 3-trifluoromethylaniline, 3-trifluoromethylaniline can be detected temporarily in trace quantities in the ground and in plants after use of the corresponding herbicide.;Concentration measurements in natural waters for 1973-1974 were 105-230 ng/ml in the River Rhine and 16 ng/ml in the River Main. Data from the 1980s are not available.;In a standard test (Zahn-Wellens-Test - test for inherent biodegradability) trifluoromethylaniline is biologically degraded. After 28 days, the value for biological degradability was 74%.;3-Trifluoromethylaniline emitted into the air is subjected to a photochemical-oxidative degradation by reaction with photochemically formed OH radicals, where a half-life value of approximately 10 hours was estimated.
